Early Life Challenges

Old Times

Nana Ama McBrown’s begun 44 years ago. Born on the 15th of August, 1977, Nana Ama McBrown to Mr. Kwabena Nkrumah and Mrs. Cecilia Agyenim Boateng, into a family with six siblings. She was born Felicity Ama Agyemang in Kumasi, Ghana.

The marriage of her parents fell on the rocks along the way. Her life took a dramatic turn from there. With the absence of her father came great hardships for her mother in taking care of her seven children.

Her story took a turn right about that time as the family struggled. In stories like this, there is always a God-send who comes to save the day. In Nana Ama’s story, Kofi McBrown and his wife Madam Betty Obiri Yeboah (Nana Ama’s aunty) would adopt Nana Ama and her siblings. She would then adopt the McBrown name. They lived together in Kwadaso still in Kumasi.

Nana Ama McBrown; Education

One of the things Nana Ama regrets and often says she would want to change about her life is her educational background; for someone who is well accomplished despite her education, she still sees it as something she would want to change. This is due to the value she places on education.

Interestingly, Nana Ama McBrown couldn’t complete her basic education at a point in time. After transitioning through three schools during her basic education, she finally ended up at the Kwadaso L.A. Junior High School where she eventually became a drop-out. She would also attend St. Peter’s International Residential School and then continued to Minnesota International and then to Central International.

It is unknown which them she finally completed her BECE with but she disclosed in an interview with JessicaOpare Saforo of Citi that she officially dropped out of school in her second term of senior high.

Determined to make something of herself, she did not give up. She pulled through later on to earn a secretarial certificate in the College of Business. Sadly, she didn’t collect her certificate after her secretarial education.

As a determined personality, she still bears hopes of pursuing formal education. Education must mean a lot to her as most people would forfeit any educational pursuits after achieving such success as hers.

Nana Ama McBrown; Rise of a Ghanaian Star and Role Model

Today she stands tall as a renowned actress, TV presenter and yes, a songwriter. To say that she achieved this success on a silver platter would be to insult the very hard work and effort she puts and has invested in her honing her craft up until this moment.

Her journey into the media and entertainment world started as a seeming accident. She had responded to a call for film auditions by Miracle Films Production but ended up being hired as a costume artist. There would be a twist in the plot when she was noticed by Samuel Nyamekye, the director on set at the time.

She was quickly positioned to take up the lead role for her first movie, That Day. This was in 2001. That was the start of her career in the Ghanaian movie space.

Her performance in the movie ‘That Day‘ earned her a role in the then-popular TV series, Tentacles. Tentacles would send her into fame as the movie gained a lot of attention.
