To know what success is, is to have traveled halfway towards achieving it. To be able to make anything happen in this life, you will first need to define it before you can pursue it. It is said that without understanding, life becomes an experiment; so you want to be successful, but do you know exactly to define success?
Is it a concept or a philosophy? Is it an event or an unending demand? Such thought-provoking questions huh? Well, thank God you are here because I am going to show you, in this article, three ways to define success, your unique kind of success so you can have a clear perspective on what it is and what it entails in your pursuit of it.
3 Ways to Define Success For Greater Chances
1. To Be Successful Is To Be Informed
Success is truly defined by how much you are informed. Informed of what exactly? Inform you of who you are, what you can do, what your limitations are, and what resources are at your disposal.
To be in the know of these key factors positions you in a place of confidence, and sets you up for the expression or manifestation of the success you desire. Let’s take a quick look at these key factors in detail:
a. Know Who You Are
You cannot define a man who has already defined himself. Knowing your identity is a key factor in achieving success; it puts a name on your success and gives a touch of uniqueness to it.
Some of the things that can help you define your identity is to begin to consider your background, your passions, your strengths and weaknesses, your dislikes and constructive opinions of others about you.
b. Know What You Can And Cannot Do
To be successful is to be true to your capacity and limitations. Some people define the measure of their success only by their strengths.
To be successful you must be able to acknowledge the things that are out of your comfort zone at the moment and the ones that you can easily put to work. Doing this grants a massive momentum to begin the pursuit of your success journey with.
Over time, you can work on your weaknesses and build capacity for the areas you currently do not have a hold on so you can add them to your objectives.
c. Know What Is At Your Disposal
There is a line in a song that goes something like, “Count your blessings name them one by one… and it may surprise you what the Lord has done.” Success can be defined by what is at your disposal.
A farmer who goes to the farm without a cutlass has already failed. A student who goes to an examination hall without a pen, (and a confident memory) has already failed (Oops, did I prick a memory?).
Now consider this,
“For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? 29 Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, 30 Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish…” says Jesus from the Christian scriptures in Luke 14:28-30.
I hope you catch my drift? You must know your provision to address your opposition.
To narrow down on exactly how to go about this, consider such things as: your education level, your skills, financial capacity, networks and connections, time available to achieve the intended target, among others.
d. Know What Needs To Be Done When.
Do you know that the first thing is not always the most important thing? What I mean to suggest with this point is that sometimes what you may desire to achieve at a point in time may not resonate with the season and surroundings you find yourself in. to swim against the tide of the holistic demands of life is not a very wise decision.
True success is wholesome in nature, not selfish or imposed. Success is defined by your priorities. Sometimes you need to put others first. There will be times where you will need to put your needs above your wants.
For example, you may want a car now, but what use is it going to be to you when you don’t even have a place to sleep. Without priorities, a seeming success can turn out to become a burden.
2. To Be Successful Is To Acknowledge Your Achievements So Far.
Success begets success. To acknowledge what is around you and see them as milestones of achievements empowers you to want to build on those feats.
This is noteworthy that to define success is to first acknowledge it. When you take a moment to take in what has been accomplished so far in gratitude and not in pride. It stems a feeling of appreciation which fuels your desire to achieve more.
I had always known that I loved writing and wished to pursue it someday, but there was very little motivation to do so. One day, a friend of mine who knew of my writing abilities, heard of a call for writers for a particular project and drew my attention to it. I mastered courage and took it up. Guess what? My submission was accepted and I received my first ever pay from my writing. Since then, anytime I have been tempted to give up on my writing journey.
I look back at that feat and tell myself, if my writing was worth something then, then it is worth something even more now. And that keeps me going. If it worked for me, it can work for you as well. You just need to find your own story of worth.
3. To Be Successful Is To Revise Your Failures
Bruce Lee once said, “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practised one kick 10,000 times.”
Did you know that successful people are those who do not shun failures but pay attention to and learn from it? The great Thomas Edison’s feat of creating the light bulb after a 1000 tries is always best put this way, that he found 999 ways how not to make a bulb, and finally found the one way to do it.
Just as rain matters to those with a seed in the ground, so it is that failure matters to those who are able to learn from it.
Don’t spite your failures, because they are stepping stones to your success. Failure is a life discipline that teaches you how not to do things and presents to you other options that may be available from the one you originally chose to pursue. Respect your failures, it is a definition of the capacity and direction of your success.
You will be successful. Don’t give up because of a few failures, obstacles or dissuasions that have come or came along the way and should you also rush your way to success. Disregarding all the principles that come with it, or knowing what it really means. You have seen that success is more than just achieving a target. To initiate any form of success, it must first be defined.
What is the definition of your success? To fine-tune that and have clarity on it, take a pen and paper (seriously do it right now) and assess how much you understand the success you want to pursue:
- Write down a series of statements describing your identity, strengths and weaknesses, resources available and what needs to be attended to first.
- Then with a thankful heart appreciate how far you have come.
- Now encourage yourself to rise above your previous or prevailing failures.
As you take these steps, you will enter a place of strategy and refreshment to pursue your success with a fresh perspective. And by God’s grace you will achieve it.
