Whether you are a final year student or just getting in, this article is written just for you. If you are a leaver, I would love to express my pride in you and also congratulate you for finishing the race. Life keeps us busy. I’ll just go ahead and give you 8 steps I believe to be a proven way to get you the job you want after college or university.

1. You might want to consider career counseling from your institution
Starting off, most institutions do not take up an active role in helping students know who they are and what they want. More importantly, leavers may not have any good reasons for their chosen fields. This is definitely not a good thing. Therefore, let’s take first things first. You may want to find a mentor, a counselor, or anyone who has the experience to help you make some of these decisions for yourself. Making these discoveries for yourself would help you go through the process of finding a job which helps you make the impact you want to see on the world. I believe our jobs are our small contributions to making the world a better place. You can get help at your institution’s guidance and counseling center. They may have a different name though.
2. Write your CV professionally and cover letters
Your resume or curriculum vitae (CV) is very vital in landing your first job. Your CV is mostly what recruiter use to decide whether to move with or without you. So, you would definitely want to have a professional CV which is designed to convince. Most students may not have a lot to add to their CV but that shouldn’t be a big problem. I would suggest ways to getting experiences for your CV. Your CV is at most 2 pages. No more. Recruiter goes through lots of applications. Do not expect them to go through your 9 paged CV for the 2 or 3 skills and experiences which matter to the job you are applying for. I personally have a general CV from which a sieve the irrelevant stuff in relation to the opportunity I am applying. So, you can decide from the numerous experiences and skills you have the exact ones which fit each position you apply. Therefore, you should have a CV for each position you apply for. Here are CV templates from google. So should your cover letter be written. Have a cover letter written for each particular job you apply for. A cover letter is your opportunity to elaborate on the skills and experiences you have in your CV. You must explain how those fit the position you are applying for and how you can use those to execute the responsibilities of the job position you are applying for. You must also exhibit a good knowledge of the company and their culture. Explain how all these fit into your life plan and would help you make the world a better place. Note that the cover letter must be formal and short enough to fit a page.
3. Have a prepared pitch, ready to present
Entrepreneurs are prone to pitches. Job searches too can utilize pitches. A pitch is preferably a 3 or 4 sentence expression containing your goals, interest and the kind of job you want. You could add why. A pitch would allow you to make the most of impromptu cases where you meet someone who wants to help you. Your pitch should be designed to win them over.
4. Know the kind of companies you would want to work for and seek them
One thing finding the right answers in the first step helps you to do is to be able to determine the kind of company you would want to work for. What are your values? Do they match with the company you want to work for? Determining the kind of companies and writing them down together with their profile will help you create the best CV and cover letter for presentation to the company. Knowing the companies, you would like to work with will allow you to connect with them and know what they look for in an employee.
5. Network everywhere you find yourself
Like it or not you would first need your Network to help you out with finding a job. Parents, family members, friends, colleagues, lecturers, mentors, etc. are groups of people you should look out for first. Reach out to them and let them know what you want. That way, they can help you to search so you don’t have to search alone.
In this age, recruiters are all the more present on social media and looking for jobs. Create a LinkedIn profile and start to interact and create connections with people who work where you would want to work. However, do not keep it closed, connect with more than just that group of people. Your job may be where you don’t expect it to be. You may think you are already on Facebook so why LinkedIn? How many recruiters go to Facebook or Twitter looking for employees? Or to recruit workers? LinkedIn even provides the tools to help them get the best match for workers they want. 6. Have a book record of your activities with regards to applications delivered etc.
Having an updated record of your job seeking activities will help you to arrange and keep your activity in order. You can easily track letters delivered, connections made, interview dates, etc. Being organized is definitely something which would help you.
7. Try an internship or volunteering
You may not have many experiences to help you land the job you need. You, therefore, need to create those experiences so you can add them to your CV. Volunteer for non-profits and charity events, look for companies and offer to do a free internship with them. Choose preferably companies and institutions which would give you the skills you need to get the job you want. You can also take courses from institutions which teach skills which would be very necessary to you landing the job of your dream.
8. Write a blog
This is the last thing. But do not for a minute think it is the least. Most freelancers get their jobs and projects through their blogs and website, social media and referrals. So, starting a blog isn’t a bad idea at all. Create the blog around your area of profession or you can write about your life, experiences, skills, interests, etc. Who knows? You could end up being a full-time blogger with good income.
