A resume is a written compilation of one’s education, work experiences, skills, accomplishments and qualifications that suits or is in line with a particular job. This is to say that resumes are job-specific, meaning, one writes a different resume for a different job and in this article you will learn how to write a winning resume that will gurantee your employebility.

Having established the above, we will now delve into a step by step way on how to write a winning resume. It must however be noted that there are different types of resumes namely; Chronological, functional, combination and targeted. But despite the differences in their arrangements, there are common features one cannot do away with in any of these.

Whatever career you’d want to pursue, it will be necessary to have objectives in that line so that when you find a job you’d want to do, you could tailor your skills to it.

This could be done in the resume you are writing by stating the relevant skills you have that are needed for the job at hand. While it is true that writing a resume is necessary, it must be noted that employers don’t have all the time to read all the resumes they receive from prospective employees.

Since we’ve already established the purpose of a resume in the opening lines of this article, it must be noted that choosing the right resume type could help you organize and present your skills well for the job at hand. Knowing the differences between the types makes it easy to choose an apt one as the type chosen could affect the presentation and organization of your skills and experiences. 

  1. Concentrate On Your Achievements

In your resume, focus on what you accomplished and the changes you spearheaded in your old company rather than what you did and the positions you held. It must be noted that employers seek result oriented persons. They need people who can take initiatives and bring positive results into their companies. It is imperative then to include what you accomplished. Once they are aligned to the requirements for the new job, the employer gets more interested and goes ahead to schedule an appointment with you. 

  1. Present Your Skills And Experiences In Chronological Order

List the qualifications, skills and timely experiences you have that pertains to the job in the right order so they could catch the attention of the employer. Do well to also indicate awards, volunteer or community experiences, postgraduate course works, skills and college education as well as describing the roles and responsibilities you played in those areas.

After compiling your resume, you can assume the position of the employer in order to scrutinize it. Take a constructive look at it and sincerely tell if you would schedule an appointment based on it and answer all the questions that may come up as you examine it. This enables you to read through thoroughly and correct any blunder you may have committed. Best Resume Format

On a general basis, every resume should contain a number of sections which form the format for the resume. The following are the essential sections and what they should contain. 

  1. Contact information

This entails your identity and should be placed on top of your resume. Some of the things to include in this section are;

  • Name and address
  • Professional Email address
  • Phone number 
  • Web Address of any online portfolio you hold. 

The essence of this is for the company or employer to be able to contact you easily when they decide to call you for an interview.

  1. Resume objective

This is a summary of what you seek to achieve or do in the company. You also tell why you are fit for the job based on your skills and experiences. Once you have identified your career objectives which fits the job you are applying for, this should be easy for you.

  1. Skills

This tells what you have that would be beneficial to the company you are applying to. Whatever skill you have must be relevant to the position you are applying for. It must also be noted that this is what could catch your employer’s attention so it must be stated succinctly for positive effect.

  1. Experiences

This could be your employment history or the names of any company you’ve worked with including the number of years spent with them. One should also include positions held and the achievements or changes that happened during their term of office. 

  1. Education

Educational accomplishments should also be stated starting from one’s highest or most recent degree.  The name and location of the institution attended and one’s degree and field of study must be added. Do well to add any publications you have done and mention that you are a member of any prominent association if you are.

  1. References

References are people who know you on a personal level and at best have worked with you or supervised you. It is important not to include family members and other people whose recommendation could be untrustworthy. Another mistake most make is not seeking permission from their references. This very mistake has robbed many people from jobs and opportunities they nearly landed. Seek their permission and make sure they are okay with being your reference. 

NB: Other sections could be added based on the goals and objectives of the resume. 


All these features rightly placed and presented in a winning resume does not guarantee you the job. However, it sells you to the employer and the job market so they could pick you up or call you when you fit their company any time. The job search process should be approached step by step.
