For you to achieve anything significant, you need to be able to set goals. That is usually the prescribed first step to doing great things. Note that sometimes setting goals alone leads no way.

For example, one of the things that I personally partake in is new year’s resolutions. At the beginning of the year, many people set goals to improve their health, wealth, emotional wellbeing, and relationship. Only a few people can achieve these goals. This clearly shows that setting goals aren’t enough to do great things.

This article shows you seven practical ways to do great things.

Because this is an unconventional guide, the seven practical ways I am listing here are not hard and fast rules. They are more like tips you can follow.

7 Unconventional Strategies to Doing Great Things

1. Volunteer

The first thing I would recommend you do is to volunteer. Volunteering is a way of helping another person or other people achieve their own goals.

There are many channels through which you can find opportunities to volunteer. One of such avenues is Whatsapp. This is how I had the chance to write with Wordinspired last year. I personally did not set a goal to write self-development articles. But when I saw the chance to write an article as a guest, I ceased it. Though, I have been very good at fictional writing since I was young. I haven’t properly worked on article writing. Through volunteering, I have been able to work consistently on this new skill.

There are other benefits of volunteering. These include an increase in confidence, reducing stress, and even finding your life purpose. What are you waiting for then? Volunteer.

2. Excitement and Inspiration

To do great things, you must be excited about what you are doing in the first place. In essence, your heart must be in. There should be a sense of joy when the subject of what you are working on comes up.

Before you feel joy, you must have some inspiration for what you are doing. This may be a person or life-changing event or a problem that they may want to solve. You may want to look up the stories of successful people in your chosen niche. By working on something great, you may end up being an inspiration to others.

3. Explore

“The power to question is the basis of all human progress.” – Indira Gandhi

Exploring is a fun way to do great things. You find a new interest, and what do you do? You read on the subject for a couple of days and put it aside? Was that the end of the matter? You resume life like nothing new happened.

No. You should satisfy your curiosity. You should explore. You should indulge your curiosity. You should ask questions and get answers.

Exploring will set you apart from your peers because you will be taking the extra step of finding why a phenomenon occurred. There is this quote by Bernard Baruch that shows the importance of this.

“Millions saw the apple fall, but Newton asked why.” – Bernard Baruch

You could be the next Isaac Newton. Indulge your curiosity. Explore.

4. Commitment

“Commitment is the foundation of great accomplishments.” – Heidi Reeder

To do great things, you don’t have only to have great goals but outstanding commitment. This means that you have to dedicate some or all your resources to meet your targets. If you are not committed, you will end up failing.

That is what happens to most people.

“Most people fail not because of a lack of desire but because of a lack of commitment.” – Vince Lombardi.

You don’t want to feel as though you are heading nowhere. You want to involve yourself wholeheartedly in pursuing your goal. You want to put in your best effort and not give up quickly when you face impediments.

You need to develop a strong sense of committing by identifying the reason for pursuing your goals in the first place. This is called setting intentions. For example, if your goal is to exercise every other day, then you need to identify why this is important to you as a person.

5. Take action

“In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”

This applies to all facets of life. That is why it is called doing great things. It is not called setting great things into motion.

How can you do great things when you don’t act? You believe with your heart that you want to achieve a goal, yet you don’t work. How are you going to do it then? Then you are just building castles in the air. You are chasing after fantasies.

This is what happens to you when you set new year’s resolutions. You fantasize about having good health, writing more, earning more money, spending time with your family. But what happens? You don’t act. You build all these expectations, sit down, and idle. You do nothing.

“Rome wasn’t built in a day.”

6. Prayer

You have goals. You have dreams. Chase them. Follow them. There is nothing wrong with that. However, a question to consider is whether your goals and objectives are God-sent.

Everyone has a purpose. Whatever goals you may have must be in line with your purpose. You do not want to be pursuing goals that lead you away from your purpose. This is very important. A way to find out if what you are doing is right is to pray. “Prayer is the key.”

There is also the saying that “God knows best.” This means you may think you have figured it out and know precisely what steps to take to achieve your dreams. But maybe you are not right, and it is not what is best for you. Take it to the Lord in prayer, then. You can use the example of Jacob to illustrate your point.

7. Partnership

This is similar to volunteering. The difference in being a partner in a project or initiative is it is more of a collaboration. You collaborate with a friend or relative on a project or activity. Here you combine your ideas and skills in solving the problem. Another distinction is that you get a share of the profit, fame, recognition, and credit for something done.

A partnership may be a great way to use division of labor and specialization to your advantage. This is because partners will bring unique skills to the table that will make reaching your goals easier. This is how many great businesses have thrived where one partner is knowledgeable in business, and the other may be more adept at creating the product or service.

You may be fortunate to find a friend of yours who shares a similar vision on a subject. You may take the extra step in attempting to solve the problem.

Another hand, if you can’t find a practical way to find people to collaborate with, you may need to reach out to people on social media.

In this article, you have learned about 7 practical ways of doing great things. You have also learned that setting goals do not get you any rewards. You get rewards by acting. If you want to improve, then you should just do it.
