I love reading self-help-books, watching and listening to motivational content and reading articles from the web to constantly keep my game-on attitude on for the best in my life. The purpose of such material is great because they make us see what our current situation would otherwise not permit and they help us develop the success mindset. Motivation and self-help are simply a great tool for the success oriented person. I used the word tool because depending on how we use such motivation we can lose ourselves in addiction or uplift our spirit for success.

Are you addicted to motivation?

As much as motivation and self-help are meant to help us they create some problems. The word self-help itself points to one of these points. It centers improvement on the individual and the individual alone. This makes it easy for you to become a self-help junkie, craving the next big gig from your favorite author, motivational YouTube channel or website. Though we are responsible for our self-development, it doesn’t mean we don’t need help from others. The world is built on interdependence you know.

How your brain reacts to shots of motivation?

Dopamine is a chemical compound which operates in the brain. Now anytime you engage in uplifting events or simply having thoughts of taking risks, having sex, eating or even achieving goals no matter how small they may be the brain releases dopamine. What dopamine does is to create that “High feeling” or sensation just as in when someone takes drugs or alcohol. Motivation may just be the world’s most addictive drug that we crave daily to do what we are supposed.

The dangers of being a motivation junkie

The problem with how most people use motivation is that they expect to get things done magically by reading, watching or listening to motivational content. That’s a false hope. It’s how most people stay at one place without doing anything and complaining that they just need more motivation. It’s a false hope we have and because it’s gives us a “high”, a little more of it won’t be bad – We tell ourselves. Consequently, most people never do anything.

The secret to getting ahead Is actually getting started!

The better way to utilize motivation

Motivation is more of a reward we get for what we do to do more. We don’t need more motivation but more action. With more action comes automatic more motivation as dopamine keeps being released. There are two kinds of people, those who want to feel motivated before starting or those who simply start then feel more motivation to continue. I want you to be the second type of person. Start wherever you are with whatever you have. Don’t wait to be motivated to what is right and good for you.

5 steps to utilizing motivation better

  1. Decide that you won’t wait to be motivated to do what is right and good for your success
  2. Create simple goals (Goals you can execute in a few or minutes or an hour)
  3. Start to work on them, in descending order of importance and relevance to you. If it’s really that important, it must be the first thing you do in the day. Period. As you take each task down, more dopamine will flow and motivation will burn through you to do more
  4. Use motivational tools wisely thus mainly to get things done – Not as an obstacle to getting things done. One of the biggest scams we use on ourselves is that we simply don’t have or need more motivation
  5. No matter what you do, do something. Get started

Motivation by all standards is great for successful living, just don’t be a junkie to it. When you find out what your life’s purpose is, don’t wait for motivation, just start because that’s what you are supposed to do. As you engage in those dopamine will take charge. As time goes on, buy motivational books, subscribe to your favorite motivational content creators but don’t let it stop you from acting.

Be committed to your goals and dreams and keep in mind that motivation is not a requirement. Motivation is a reward for doing something.
